Ever noticed how children seem to get more joy out of the box, than the toy that came in it? I learned quickly, that having fun with the kids doesn’t need to be an expensive endeavor. The process of making your own paints and playdough together, can be as much fun as playing with the finished product, and much more affordable than constantly replacing dried blobs of store bought products.

Playdough

  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tsp. vegetable oil
  • food coloring (if desired)
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 2 tbsp. cornstarch

Mix water, salt, oil and enough food coloring to make a bright color. Gradually add in flour and cornstarch until the mixture reaches the consistency of bread dough. Mold and play!

Flour Finger Paint

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 tbsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • food coloring
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water
  • saucepan
  • whisk or rotary beater

Put flour and salt into a saucepan. Add cold water and beat with a whisk or rotary beater until smooth. Add hot water and boil until mixture is thick. Beat again until smooth. Keep in refrigerator and color as needed with food coloring.
